I’ve Never Once Used a Straw the Normal Way

Seller Strategy

I have a confession that took me years to even notice about myself.

I cannot drink out of a straw the normal way. Ever. It always has to come out of the side of my mouth, never the middle. It isn’t a decision I make. It’s just how my mouth has apparently decided this works.

For a long time I assumed everyone had little quirks like this and simply didn’t mention them. Then one day I caught myself mid-sip, sideways as ever, and thought, is this strange?

Maybe. But here’s the thing. It works. Every sip, every time. No spills, no mess, no awkward dribble down my chin. My slightly unconventional method gets the job done better than the proper way ever did for me.

I think about that more than a grown woman probably should, mostly because of what it taught me about the work I do.

The standard way of doing something and the right way for you are not always the same thing. Plenty of people pour a lot of energy into forcing themselves through a method that was never built for them, simply because it’s the one everyone agreed to call normal.

Selling a home is full of these moments.

Your neighbor sold in a weekend with three offers over asking, so you assume that’s the playbook. Your coworker swears by the exact paint color, the exact listing day, the exact pricing strategy that worked for them. And there you are, trying to fit your house, your timeline, and your life into a plan that was shaped around somebody else’s.

Sometimes that plan fits. Often, it doesn’t quite.

Maybe your home has a feature that buyers in your corner of the market will pay a premium for, and a generic approach would have left that money on the table. Maybe your timeline has a wrinkle in it, a job starting, a family situation, a school year to work around, that makes the textbook listing date the wrong one for you. Maybe your house tells a story that needs the right photos and the right words to land, not just a lockbox and a hope.

When I take on a listing, the first thing I want to understand is you. What you’re working with, what you’re hoping for, what would make this feel like a real win and not just a sale. Then we build the approach around that. The marketing, the pricing, the staging tweaks that make a buyer stop scrolling and start picturing their own life inside your walls. Some of it might look a little sideways compared to what your neighbor did. That’s usually a good sign.

I’ve sat with sellers who were convinced they needed a big, expensive renovation before listing, when what their home actually called for was a weekend of decluttering and a few smart updates that cost a fraction. I’ve also met sellers who were ready to underprice out of pure nerves, when the right read on their specific market said hold steady and wait for the buyer who would see it.

None of that comes off a template. It comes from paying close attention to the home in front of me and the people who live in it.

Selling your home is a big deal, and it deserves a plan that fits the way your life is actually shaped. When we lean into what works for you, the whole thing gets smoother, steadier, and honestly a little more fun.

Even if it looks nothing like the middle of the straw.
