Let me take you back to one of my favorite childhood memories.
It was a Friday night, and my parents were out for a rare date night. My brother and I decided we’d surprise them with homemade brownies.
Why we picked that recipe, I’ll never understand. The instructions called for a cup of eggs.
Now let me set the stage. My brother was a future roadway engineer. I was a sophomore on my way to tackling calculus. Two straight-A kids standing in a kitchen, completely stumped by the same question.
How many eggs are in a cup?
We guessed. Two seemed reasonable enough.
Spoiler: that is not how that works.
The timer dinged, and we pulled out what can only be described as a brick masquerading as brownies. When my mom got home and we explained ourselves, she burst out laughing and said, “How are you both getting straight A’s right now?” Then she grabbed a measuring cup, cracked eggs into it until it was full, and calmly showed us what a cup of eggs actually looked like.
Lesson learned. We never spoke of it again.
For the record, mom is still the baker in the family. She bakes more than a hundred pies for my clients every Thanksgiving. It’s how I became known around here as the Pie Realtor. The torch did not pass.
Here’s why that memory sticks with me.
Even the smartest, most capable people get stuck the moment they’re standing in unfamiliar territory. It’s never about how sharp you are. The unfamiliar trips up even the brightest of us. Nobody is born knowing how many eggs are in a cup.
Real estate is its own kitchen with its own recipes.
Most of the people I work with are sharp. They run companies, raise families, and handle hard things every single day. Then they sit down at a closing table and realize they’ve never once read a purchase contract in their lives. That’s not a gap in their intelligence. That’s just a kitchen no one has invited them into yet.
That’s where I come in.
My job is to be the mom in the brownie story. The one who walks in, sees the bricks on the cookie sheet, and says, “Here. Let me show you what that’s supposed to look like.” No judgment. No lecture. Just a measuring cup, and someone glad to hand it to you.
So if you’ve been holding back a question because you feel like you should already know the answer, let this be your nudge. There are no silly questions in my office. Only cabinets I haven’t shown you yet.
Bring me the one you’ve been embarrassed to ask. I’ll bring the measuring cup.
Whenever you’re ready, I’m here.
