Trevor and I honeymooned in New York, and it was every bit as magical as we’d hoped.
It was March. The weather behaved itself. We spent our days wandering with no real agenda, which is still my favorite way to see a city. One afternoon we found ourselves in Little Italy, where I ate the best cannoli of my entire life. I can still taste it.
And then I faceplanted.
Full sidewalk sprawl. In front of everyone. Cannoli somehow still in hand, because I have my priorities.
Now, you should know something about my husband. He is always scanning for danger. So in the split second I went down, he did not reach for me. He dove behind a trash can. Like we’d come under fire. I can only blame the number of times he’d watched The Godfather.
I lay there, scraped up and laughing too hard to be embarrassed, and two things became very clear. One, I would never live this down. Two, when life trips you up out of nowhere, having someone there who can laugh with you, even from behind a trash can, changes everything.
I’ve thought about that scraped-knee moment a lot in the years since, especially with the clients I help through what I call a Golden Move.
A Golden Move is the one you make as you step into retirement. Downsizing. Trading the big house and its long list of upkeep for something that fits the life you actually want to live now. It sounds simple enough on paper. In practice, it can feel like a leap into the unknown.
There’s the house you raised a family in, holding more memories than closet space. There’s the sorting, the deciding, the quiet grief of letting some things go and the surprising relief of releasing others. There’s the very real chance of a stumble somewhere along the way. A delay. A surprise. A day when it all feels like too much.
I won’t pretend those stumbles never happen. They do. What I can tell you is that you won’t be lying on the sidewalk alone when they come.
This is the part of my work I take most to heart. Long before move-out day, I make sure my Golden Move clients have what they need to feel steady. Resources to help you sort through decades of belongings without drowning in it. Honest timelines, even for the tricky double moves where you’re selling one place and landing in another and the dates refuse to line up neatly. A plan for the parts that tend to catch people off guard, so fewer of them catch you.
I’ve walked alongside people who were genuinely afraid of this transition at the start, certain they’d never get through the sheer volume of it all. And I’ve watched those same people a few months later, settled into a smaller, lighter, easier home, wondering why they’d waited so long to feel this free.
Because here’s what a Golden Move is really about, and it has very little to do with square footage. It’s freedom. More time with the people you love. More room in your week for the things you kept promising yourself you’d get to someday. More laughter, and yes, more cannolis.
And if there’s a misstep along the way, a scraped knee, a hard day, a moment where it all feels like a sidewalk sprawl in front of a crowd, I’ll be right there. Dusting you off. Making sure you don’t lose your cannoli.
